Have you been wanting to host your own trivia night but don’t know where to begin? Look no further, we’ve got you covered! Hosting trivia can be more difficult than it seems. From writing the questions, making an answer sheet, and of course the event itself. Tasty Trivia has spent many years perfecting our system, and today we are excited to share it with you!
The Outline:Â
Before you begin writing the questions, you will need to figure out how many rounds you’d like your game to last. Here at Tasty Trivia, we like to do 5 rounds. We find it is the perfect amount of time to get a good game in and keeps the focus of the players. In each round we have a total of 5 questions with a potential for a bonus question! These questions should all fit within a single category per round. This will keep your players focused in on a certain topic and help them determine the correct answer!
Question Writing:Â
After coming up with each round’s category, it is time to write the questions! Now your first instinct might be to google “Science Trivia Questions,” but slow your role! Not all questions you find this way will be good questions. You must be careful that your questions aren’t too broad. If they are then there might be more than one answer and trust us, you want to AVOID that!
For example: “This actor played the role of two marvel superheroes.” As you probably know there are quite a few actors who have played more than one hero. Let’s make this a little more detailed and see what we get. “This Canadian actor has played the role of two different Marvel superheroes, one being more inappropriate than the average hero.” After adding some more details, the answer is clearly narrowed down to Ryan Reynolds. Other ways you can add details include, years, titles, other facts relating to the answers, or even little clues that might be separate from the question.
Writing the questions is certainly the most difficult and time-consuming part. If you want help or don’t have the time, we can help you out with that. Purchase a custom trivia game made just for you right here!
Hosting:Â
The time has finally come to host your trivia night! Start by passing out your answer sheets and don’t forget the pens! Have your teams come up with a team name (this will help sort your teams on your scoreboard). Once everyone is ready, go ahead and give them a run down on the game. Let them know each category for each round that way they can start preparing themselves!
Now it is time to read the questions! At Tasty Trivia we like to read one round at a time, grade their answers, then read the answers out loud to the group. Make sure to read each question twice with a small pause in between. This will allow for the teams to think and discuss the potential answers. After reading the last question of the round go ahead and ready each question one more time before grading. This is important as they may have missed the question the first time or are unsure and need to hear it again.
Once you have finished reading them go ahead and grade each team! At Tasty Trivia we follow this scoring:
5 questions correct = 15 points
4 questions correct = 14 points
3 questions correct = 13 points
2 questions correct = 12 points
1 question correct = 11 points
0 questions correct = 10 points
If they get the bonus question correct, then that will add 2 points to their score.
After adding up the scores make sure to read out the correct answers to the group because after all we want our players to learn something new!
Repeat this cycle over and over until you’ve reached the end of your game! We hope this helps! Happy Hosting!
